Pleurothallis ??? - purchased fall 1993 at the Denver Botanic Gardens annual orchid sale. |
|
Dendrobium ??? - purchased early 1994 at Sturtz & Copeland, a fairly nice
greenhouse here in Boulder. It's probably a hybrid from Fantasy Orchids in
Louisville, Co; based on its resistance to abuse perhaps D. unknownium x
cantkillium. If anyone has other possibilities based on photo & source let
me know. (Update: Grant & Barbara Freeman of, I think, QLD Australia (?)
emailed to say this is 'Dendrobium Youppadeewan "Orchidglade" (Jaq-Hawaii x
Theodore Takiguchi)'... Thanks, folks!)
Two more large pictures: one showing the flowers, but very little foliage, and another showing the whole plant. It's in a small (about 12cm across) hanging basket I made myself out of cherry. Originally it was planted in something that looked rather like potting soil but since the plant went downhill rapidly after I bought it I quickly built the basket and moved the plant into that. It's got some fine and medium grade fir bark in there with it, and a fair amount of open space.

Pleurothallis tribuloides - bought in spring '95 from
Venger's Orchids in Colorado Springs.
It was potted in sphagnum when I got it but I moved it to tree fern bark
within a week or so. Unlike the unidentified Pleur mentioned above this
one has a very small ball of sphagnum still around the roots, and I
simply pushed the whole root ball into a knothole in the tree fern.
It blooms every few months; I think that it's blooming when I
fertilize more heavily but I'm not positive.
I have
another (big) picture of this plant in
bloom, from a different angle.

Phalaenopsis Hawaiian Sugar 'White Beauty' x self - bought in fall of '95 from Venger's. I bought this in bloom; normally I have some misgivings about buying a plant when it's in bloom as sometimes plants sulk when moved and drop all those nice blooms. This one stayed in bloom for about 3 months before finally dropping the blooms; roots seem to be growing nicely too. The blooms are gorgeous, unscented, and about 10 cm. across. Rod at Venger's says that future blooms will be bigger as the plant is young yet... we'll see. This picture is nearly identical save for a slightly longer exposure time. |
